Treasure Valley Community College

Caldwell, Idaho

Background

Prior to my career in software, I honed my skills in the field of design as an architect and project manager on large commercial projects, such as this example.

The Treasure Valley Community College at Caldwell Center is the first building in a planned revitalization of downtown Caldwell, on a renewed section of the once covered Indian Creek. It offers college prep, transfer and professional technical classes. The style and materials of the three-story, 39,000 sf college were designed to reflect the dichotomy of the surrounding urban landscape, blending industrial finishes with traditional masonry and stone.

Bold and dynamic primary entrances face the adjacent Indian Creek greenway, which serves as a connector to downtown Caldwell. These entrances are clearly delineated with sunshades and brick-paved patios. Further connections to the natural environment are established through extensive use of low-e glazing at lounges and lobbies where people gather to study and interact. Occupied spaces are arranged around central cores on each floor to maximize day-lighting and outside visibility.

Two key design challenges included programming within a tight budget and a desire to achieve LEED Silver certification (the project achieved Gold).

The TVCC Caldwell Center is the cornerstone for planned redevelopment of Caldwell's downtown core, which will include a large public plaza, revitalization of the historic business district, and a home for the City's civic services.

Architectural renderings were used extensively throughout the design process to gather feedback and buy-in from a wide range of stakeholders.

Industrial finishes and detailing were used throughout the project to pay homage to the community's agricultural and industrial traditions.

The TVCC Caldwell Center was designed for flexibility to serve a number of functions, and includes 12 large classrooms, two video classes, science labs, a student center and bookstore.

TVCC sits on an "island lot" that is highly visible from all sides. As a result, considerable attention was given to the aesthetic appearance of every facade, including the alley (seen here).

“Chad did a fantastic job for us in our development of the Treasure Valley Community College building. Considering the incredibly fast schedule imposed on him, he turned out a wonderful building design while paying attention to critical details and keeping a cost-effective budget in mind. He did a great job for us and we look forward to working with Chad again!”
